Interview Tips from Our Hiring Managers

Let’s be real—interviews can be nerve-wracking. You’re trying to make a great impression, remember everything you practiced, and still sound like yourself. We get it. That’s why we asked some of our hiring managers at MasterSpas to share what really stands out to them during interviews—and what they love to see in candidates.

Think of this as advice straight from the other side of the table.

1. Be Yourself (Seriously—No “Interview Version” Required)

One of the biggest things our managers emphasized is authenticity.

“During the interview, my goal is to get to know the real you—not the version you think we expect. Transparency is key because it helps both of us determine if we’re a great cultural fit.” - Nathan Coelho, VP of Engineering

You don’t need to perform or guess what we want to hear. In fact, that usually works against you in the long run. Our Research and Development Manager, Jim Cardinale, says “Just be the real you during the interview. There’s no need to put on a show or try to guess what we want. Even if an act works in the short term, it rarely leads to the best long-term fit.”

So take a breath, relax, and talk to us like a real person. We want to make sure this is a place you’ll actually enjoy coming to every day—not just a job you landed.

2. Show Initiative and Ownership

While experience matters, mindset matters just as much. Our Training Manager, Adam Hughes, looks for people who don’t wait to be told what to do, but take responsibility and make an impact.

At Master Spas, the people who stand out are the ones who 'own it'. Employees who take initiative and make a difference are the ones who stand out.

During your interview, this might mean sharing examples of when you stepped up, solved a problem, or took responsibility—whether that was at work, school, or even in a group project. You don’t need a perfect story, just an honest one.

3. Bring Your Energy and Enthusiasm

We know not everyone is loud or outgoing (I'm certainly not)—and that’s okay. But passion still matters. In the interview, Nathan says it's important that we feel your enthusiasm and genuine interest in joining Master Spas.

If you’re excited about the role, the team, or the opportunity to grow, don’t hide it. We do have a culture of being exceptional here. If you share that drive, don’t hold back—let it come through in your tone and energy. You’ll fit right in.

That excitement tells us you’re not just looking for a job—you’re interested in this one.

4. Be Ready for Change and Variety

If you like routine every single day, this might not be your thing—and that’s okay. But if you enjoy staying busy and adapting, you’ll probably thrive here.

“If you enjoy variety and adapting to new challenges, Master Spas offers a dynamic work environment.” - Adam Hughes, Training Manager

Things move quickly in our industry, and flexibility matters. We look for candidates who can move with it.

Or as Adam put it: “This isn’t a one-task-all-day kind of job—flexibility and momentum matter here.”

Talking about how you’ve handled change, learned on the fly, or balanced multiple responsibilities can really help us understand how you’ll fit into our environment.

5. Collaboration and Communication Go a Long Way

No one succeeds alone here. Nathan states that collaboration is at the heart of what we do. Share examples of how you’ve worked successfully with others, solved problems as a team, or supported colleagues.

Just as important is how you communicate. Strong communication is key in our fast-paced environment. Be prepared to explain your ideas and experiences in a way that shows clarity and confidence.

You don’t need fancy language—just clear, thoughtful answers that show how you think and work with others.

6. Ask Questions—It’s a Two-Way Street

This one comes up every time.

“Always be prepared with your own questions—about the day-to-day, what others in the department find challenging, the manager's leadership style, the company's goals, etc.” - Kate Ewing, Dealer Support Manager

Asking questions shows curiosity and engagement, but it also helps you. Interviews are a two-way street. Asking thoughtful questions shows you’re engaged and helps you understand if Master Spas is the right fit for you.

We want you to leave the interview feeling informed and confident—not guessing.

7. Know Our Core Values—and Picture Yourself Living Them

One final tip from our managers: do a little reflection before you come in.

“Study our Core Values, and reflect on two questions before the interview. Does this sound like the kind of environment that fits me? How would I live into these Core Values every day at Master Spas?” - Jim Cardinale, Research and Development Manager

You don’t need to memorize anything—but thinking about how your values align with ours can make your answers more meaningful and your experience more genuine.

Final Thought: We’re Rooting for You

At the end of the day, we’re not looking for perfection. We’re looking for motivated, collaborative people who want to grow, contribute, and be part of something fast-paced and rewarding.

Come prepared. Be honest. Ask questions. And most importantly—be yourself.

We’re excited to meet you!
